Sunny Santorini

Santorini

Santorini was amazingly beautiful, albeit touristy. We took a ferry there from Mykonos. It was a long bumpy ride.

The driver provided by our accommodation met us at ferry port. He had been waiting for a few hours as our ferry was severely delayed and impeded by the weather condition that day. (We initially thought we made a mistake with our ferry timing when waiting for it at Mykonos.) We were already feeling slightly sick, having already puked a coupled of times on board. The bumpy ride to our hotel in Firostefani did not make things better.

Anyway, despite feeling slightly under the weather after checking in, we decided to carry on with our plan to walk to the town of Fira. It was early in the evening, and we enjoyed a cool breeze along the way coupled with astonishing views of the caldera. We even managed to peek into a wedding along the way. Wedding with such a view – no better way to get married off! The fresh air did a lot to help with how we were feeling. By the time we got to Fira, we were feeling much better.

We spent most part of the evening browsing through the many shops in Fira. Soon it got dark (since we were behind schedule due to the ferry delay), and we decided to head back to Firostefani where there was a traditional homely restaurant we had picked out for dinner. The hotel had recommended it to us and we heard raving reviews about the food.

But… We could not finish nor enjoy the food. It was so embarrassing to leave with our food nearly untouched when everyone else in there were complimenting the staff on its awesomeness. We had ZERO appetite, and found out the next day that we had food poisoning.

Both my husband and I were vomiting and having diarrhoea the next day. We felt so weak under the scorching sun, and even had to head back to the hotel for a short nap. But because we had planned to leave Santorini the next day, we pressed on and took a cab to Oia, the most picturesque in Santorini and home of the famous Oia sunset. And it was totally worth it! We had to stop to rest and/or puke multiple times, but I’m glad we decided to persevere. No trip to Santorini would be complete without visiting Oia.

To this day, I cannot even look at the word ‘feta’ without losing my appetite. Because I expelled what looked like lumps of feta cheese at the square in front of the church in Oia. I guess dinner did not get digested well.
